5 new coronavirus cases, schools closed until April

Washoe County Health District (WCHD) announced today that it received five new positive test results for COVID-19.

That brings Washoe County’s total cases to nine. The five new cases are:

  • A woman in her 40s who traveled to Southern California.
  • A woman in her 30s who traveled to the Bay Area in California.
  • A man in his 20s who is a close contact to a previously-identified case in Washoe County.
  • A man in his 30s who is a close contact to a previously-identified case in Washoe County.
  • A woman in her 30s who is a close contact to a previously-identified case in Washoe County.

“All cases are in stable condition and are self-isolating at their homes,” the district wrote in a press statement. “The Health District is investigating and working to identify close risk contacts to prevent community spread of the disease. Due to medical privacy requirements and to protect their identity, no further information about the case will be released.”

Governor shuts down schools

Governor Steve Sisolak announced this afternoon that all public and private schools are closed until April 6, 2020.

“Nevada schools may not reopen until the State Chief Medical Officer evaluates the public health risk and determines when it is safe for each district to reopen,” he said. “We will continue to be in contact with districts, teachers and parents and provide updated timeline info as it becomes available.”
