If you went anywhere in Reno this past summer, then you would remember seeing lawn signs designed like a political campaign. However, instead of urging neighbors to vote on a candidate, the signs asked the public to vote on art.
The “Vote Nevada Art” project was in collaboration with the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. Only five museums in the West would have the honor to display art from the Smithsonian on their walls and Nevada Museum of Art was selected as part of the five.
To involve the community more on this decision, the Nevada Museum of Art created a campaign allowing people to vote. The successful effort drew votes from nearly 10,000 people living both in and out of the state. The winners were unveiled Nov. 7.
Of the eight paintings on the ballot, the three that were chosen by the people were Hassam’s “The South Ledges, Appledore” 1913, Hopper’s “Ryder’s House” 1933, and O’Keeffe’s “Hibiscus with Plumeria” 1939. The three art pieces were all painted in different styles: impressionism, realism, and modernist. The winning paintings are also each national treasures from prevalent American artists.
It’s not often that the Smithsonian lends its collection out to other museums, making the exhibit at NMA a rare opportunity for the community to see these artworks. These paintings will call Nevada home through April 2020, when they’ll return to Washington D.C. Be sure to take a trip to the Nevada Museum of Art before then to see these magnificent works of art in person.
