University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources hosted its annual Field Day at the Main Station Field Lab in East Reno Saturday, Oct. 19. The event offered an opportunity for the community to see and interact with the work being done by the college’s students, faculty, and staff.

Almost 50 booths involving the college’s many programs and projects were on display allowing for an interactive and fun day of learning for all who attended. Nestled between haystacks, similar to giant outdoor office cubicles, the booths offered a wide range of diversity from cooking demonstrations to interactive kids’ educational activities.

At one booth, a group of kids surrounded a microscope peering into the structure of some of the rocks that make up the geology of Nevada’s high desert. A few rows down, another group of kids practiced their fishing casts with Nevada Department of Wildlife staff members.

Heidi Kratsch, a horticulture specialist at UNR, represented the Qwel booth, which focuses on sustainable landscaping and water efficiency certifications. “We are the land grant institution in Nevada. We need to be connected to our community and this is one way we can showcase our programs and have the community feel a connection with the university. Hopefully, it allows the community to see what things we are doing in both [Cooperative] Extension and the College of Agriculture to make their lives better.”

UNR hosts the event annually in the fall, and it’s free for the community to attend.
