Wilbur May Museum Hosts Art of the Aloha Shirt

Explore the history and artistry of Hawaii’s enduring fashion statement – the Aloha shirt – at the Wilbur D. May Museum’s new exhibition. Art of the Aloha Shirt features original textile work, production sketches and swatches, advertisements, and vintage Hawaiian shirts. This colorful exhibit tells the story of the iconic shirt that left an indelible mark on fashion around the world.   

The exact origins of the Hawaiian shirt remain a mystery, but the style emerged in the late 1920s and early 30s. There was no better innovator or self-promoter of the Hawaiian shirt than John “Keoni” Meigs, a self-taught painter and shirt manufacturer. Inspired by traditional Polynesian patterns, Keoni made his first designs in 1938 and went on to produce as many as 300 Hawaiian shirt designs. Art of the Aloha Shirt explores Keoni’s contributions to the industry and lasting legacy.

Art of the Aloha was curated by Dale Hope, a Hawaiian native and second generation veteran of the garment industry. The exhibition was organized by ExhibitsUSA, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance.
