Lyle Lovett Lifts Up The Silver Legacy (Subscriber Content)

The Silver Legacy’s Grand Exposition Hall hosted this amazing group of musicians Friday night (7/12), and they did not disappoint. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band have not been to these parts in a long time, but the drought has ended. The sounds of this incredible 13 piece band rained down in the Exposition Hall with great passion, and it was good. It was better than good.

It was a joyful noise that lifted the spirits of all in attendance.

I laughed and I cried as Lyle told stories and sang his songs with a voice like a velvet field, smooth as silk and rough as gravel, depending on the requirements. The sound in the room would be that of 13 musicians blowing and strumming and kicking it out, or as subtle as Lyle gently finger picking the guitar and pouring his heart out in song.

Lyle gave the stage over to a couple of band members to share their originals. Guitarist Keith Sewell shared his song, Sweet Magnolia, and fiddle player Luke Bulla played The Temperance Song. At this point Lyle, Luke and Keith gathered around a single microphone and played a short set of songs together, center stage, singing into the same mic. This made for a very soulful interlude.

This show filled my heart with a warm glow that few others have. Lyle’s gentle approach at performing makes it clear that he loves what he does and truly appreciates his audience. Try as I did I could not compile a complete list of players in this show. I got most of them, but I cannot go without acknowledging the contributions of Francine Reed. Near the end she was spotlighted in Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues. She is a requirement in Lyle’s Large Band.

At times it felt like I was in a living room listening to friends’ play, at other times it felt like a giant dance hall, and then, you were off to church.
