The Nevada Museum of Art’s newest exhibit opened on July 20, 2019. This new exhibit is called “Living Modern” and focuses on Georgia O’Keeffe’s full life, rather than just her art. Any artist could attest to the statement that everything is art. O’Keeffe lived her life with this mindset, and the exhibit shows just that.

There are the classic O’Keeffe paintings we all know and love, alongside photos of O’Keeffe, her wardrobe, and sculptures among other objects.

There was also uniqueness to the display. The fashion pieces weren’t hiding in boxes but out in the open to allow for an up-close look, and a projector hung from the ceiling presenting a slide show of photos. The exhibit is organized chronologically and follows the artist’s time in New York and New Mexico.

This differs greatly from what one would expect from a Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit because it moves past the art and focuses on the artist. This is a refreshing approach.

While I’m very familiar with O’Keeffe’s work and have studied it in the past, I never had the opportunity to learn about her life. Those wanting to see O’Keeffe’s art and those who are already well versed with her art will find much to explore in this exhibit.

The preview for the exhibit was highly detail-oriented, with a color theme of red, black, and white and Spanish themed foods being served inspired by O’Keeffe’s time spent in the Southwest.

A surprising treat for the evening was Flamenco guitarist Milton Merlos. He gracefully strung his guitar along at a skill level I had never witnessed before. He seemed to never miss a note and put his full energy into each song.

This combination is one I think O’Keeffe would approve of. Her exhibit showed a plethora of different art forms she enjoyed past painting. She truly lived a life full of art.

Georgia O’Keeffe was an inspiration to many when she was alive and still is to this day. She held true to herself in a time where this was most important for women. Her courageousness to be herself still sparks a flame to this day to question conformity and see life past boundaries.

Come check out the exhibit anytime between July 20th and October 20th.
