The Washoe County Commission on Tuesday appointed an assistant county manager as interim manager until the position is permanently filled, which is expected this fall.
David Solaro’s appointment becomes effective June 14, the date County Man
Solaro’s compensation as interim manager will be 10 percent above his present compensation, which is about $182,000, according to Transparent Nevada.
He has been with Washoe County 16 years and became an assistant county manager in September 2017. His current areas of responsibility include the Community Services Department, Regional Animal Services, and Constituent Services. He’s also a liaison to the health department, library system, and general improvement districts.
Patricia Hurley, human resources director, said she contacted the three assistant county managers about the interim position and two opted out of consideration. Solaro doesn’t plan to apply for the permanent position, she said.
“(The interim manager) will be the one who will be able to move the county forward and keep us in the same direction until a permanent county manager is put into place,” Hurley said.
Washoe County first went through standard procedures to fill Slaughter’s position, including posting the opening on GovernmentJobs.com and through other routine venues for two weeks starting April 23. It garnered 17 applicants, 11 which met minimum qualifications.
A national search is also underway. The cost for a search firm is expected to be between $30,000 and $40,000.
Qualified candidates will be interviewed in early August, with a formal appointment in late summer and a start date in early fall, according to a proposed timeline.
