Our Center today announced that it is offering new programs for LGBTQA seniors.

“Aging with Pride, our seniors programs, will kick-off as part of Older Americans month with Older LGBTQA Nevadans Day on May 23 with an afternoon of activities,” said Our Center President Jeromy Manke.

Activities for the day include beanbag baseball, a luncheon, and a screening of the 2006 movie Kinky Boots.

The City of Reno and its Senior Citizens Advisory Committee helped fund the event.

Manke said that senior programs seniors’ officially start June 1 with a morning walk/run, a seniors’ dance, and pancake breakfast. Ongoing programs for seniors will be held each week.

“The present Reno City Council has many times said it wants Reno Seniors to be active and social,” said Paco Lachoy, who is coordinating the Seniors Programs at OUR Center. “OUR Center has created activities to get Seniors out of their homes, socializing and having some fun.

“The goal: active, social and healthy Seniors. OUR Center is a welcome placing for all and the community is invited to come and participate in the Aging with Pride programs.”

“LGBTQ+ seniors are seven times more likely to be alone,” said Meredith Tanzer, Our Center vice-president and director of programing. “It is exciting to be able to offer programs to bring this segment of our community together to socialize and interact, so they are not alone.”
