Aspen Ridge Apartments Wants Citizens to Weigh In on School Rezoning

Aspen Ridge Apartments Asks For Community Involvement

Aspen Ridge Apartments

In the Aspen Ridge Apartment Community, children have always gone to Caughlin Ranch Elementary and Swope Middle Schools. On Tuesday, May 28, the rezoning committee will present its recommendations to the Washoe County School Board, which will redraw the zoning lines.

“We have had the opportunity and privilege of our children attending one of the best elementary and middle schools in Reno: Caughlin Ranch Elementary and Swope Middle Schools,” said Suzanne Camacho, Regional Manager with Alliance Residential.

If the board accepts this new recommendation, it will result in the students no longer being permitted to attend these schools as of the 2020-2021 school year. Aspen Ridge is asking their community to tell Washoe County to oppose the committee’s recommendation on rezoning.

“In subsequent years this may result in our children not being able to attend Reno High School as well,” said Camacho. “This committee’s recommendation is singling out apartment and condo communities, which goes directly against the school board’s goals to make all schools accessible to every child.”

The rezoning options that the committee will decide on are affecting only multi-family communities. For these residents, instead of going to Caughlin Ranch Elementary School, the students would go to Huffaker Elementary School, and instead of attending Swope Middle School, they would go to Pine Middle School.

“We would encourage all residents at Aspen Ridge to be involved in this effort so our children can continue to receive the best education possible,” said Camacho. “We’re asking the Washoe County School Board to reject this proposal and for the community to voice their objection via the email listed below.”
