Urban Roots is partnering with the Washoe County School District and Health District to teach students about gardening, food, exercise, and healthy eating. Students, families, and staff at Lemmon Valley Elementary School are building a new school garden where they will grow fruits and vegetables while learning about their new outdoor classroom.
The project’s goal is to increase physical activity and healthy nutrition habits among adults and children. The message: improve health by “eating five fruits and vegetables, participating in two hours or less of recreational screen time, and one hour of physical activity, and consuming zero sugary drinks.”
Lemmon Valley Elementary School Principal Michael Lansing explained the project:
“At Lemmon Valley, we encourage a variety of learning experiences that will engage and enrich students in Kindergarten through fifth grade,” he said. “We are excited about the opportunity that Urban Roots and the Health District have provided and feel that the addition of a workable garden at our school will help to inspire and encourage students’ academic growth through a fun hands-on experience.”
An Urban Roots teacher provides training to teachers and helps to incorporate the garden into their curriculum. Volunteer groups will “adopt” the school’s garden and maintain it throughout the summer months.
