State, District Drop Digital Snow Days

Date:

Washoe County School District Superintendent Traci Davis announced today that the district was dropping its digital snow day policy after a Friday meeting with the Nevada Department of Education.

“Going forward, if inclement weather forces the closure of schools, students will simply observe a ‘snow day’ without school work to perform at home,” she said.

Davis denied that WCSD violated the law in implementing the digital days last year but added that “the feedback we have received that this has been a frustrating process for some of our families and staff members, and we regret that.”

The state, however, had notified WCSD in January that its digital days policy did not comply with five state statutes.

“Based on the previously listed … statutes and regulations, this proposal is not approved as it is inconsistent with existing laws and regulations,” said former state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Steve Canavero.

WCSD implemented the policy anyway. Its implementation was met with significant community outcry.
