The public can support efforts to combat hunger locally by donating non-perishable food to any Washoe County library branch during April in lieu of overdue fines.
Food barrels will be available at all 12 locations, and donated food will be delivered to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Donations at the Incline Village Library will support Project Making Adequate Nutrition Accessible, also known as Project MANA.
Patrons are asked to bring one food item for each overdue item or fine. Food cannot be exchanged for lost or damaged library materials.
“Everyone is welcome to participate in this collaborative spring food drive,” Library Director Jeff Scott said in a statement. “With the help of the community, Washoe County Library System’s previous spring food drive events have been hugely successful, and we are pleased to continue to offer this opportunity.”
Items most needed include canned meats, fish, peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, powdered milk, baby formula, and baby food. Complete meals in a can, such as stew, chili, ravioli, and hearty soups are also needed, along with canned fruit, juice, vegetables, dry cereal, oatmeal, rice, and pasta.
