UPDATE: August 21, 2019

Herrera last month pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, according to the Record-Courier, to a charge of conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon.

As part of his plea deal, Herrera avoided his court case and will seek treatment for PTSD, as well as participating in the Reno Veterans Court. He could still face about a year in jail.

Herrera no longer shows up on the Washoe County School District’s website as an employee.

Original Story

Washoe County School District employee William Herrera is facing a charge of assault in Douglas County from an incident that occurred last year. According to reporting in The Record-Courier, Herrera, an ROTC logistics manager, was staying at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino when he charged $60 worth of alcohol — and a $400 tip — to his room.

The charge was rejected, so security staff went to his room. The Record-Courier reported that:

Security officers said Herrera threatened them with a knife and they retreated, with Herrera stabbing the door after the officers left and called 911.

Deputies arrived and took Herrera into custody without incident. He told them he was working security and that he’d rented several rooms, including three in Carson City, and stashed weapons in them.

Carson City Sheriff’s deputies found the weapons and school district property in rooms he had rented.

School District officials said Herrera is still an employee and would not disclose what property was found in the Carson City rooms.

“Herrera is still employed with the Washoe County School District and is currently on administrative leave,” said spokesperson Megan Downs. “In order to ensure that Mr. Herrera receives due process, as we do with all employees, this is a confidential matter and the District cannot comment any further.”

Herrera has a trial scheduled in August.

The Douglas County District Attorney did not respond to a request for information, and attempts to reach Herrera were unsuccessful.
