Nine new affordable housing units are coming to Reno as part of a partnership between the Nevada Youth Empowerment Project and Truckee Meadows Housing Solutions.
The organizations are partnering to build a facility with nine units that will range from $450-550 a month.
“We’re excited to bring truly affordable housing to the area,” said Monica DuPea, executive director of NYEP. “This provides some hope in Reno. Hopefully, we can bring more than 15 units.”
The Reno City Council yesterday voted to approve a zoning change to enable the project to be constructed. Five of the nine units will be open for graduates of NYEP’s community living program, and the other four will be designated for seniors.
The property, at West Fourth Street near Fourth and Keystone Avenue, was sold by the city for $1. The property’s use is designated for affordable housing for a minimum of 50 years.
“This property will not bring in any money,” DuPea said. “We’re doing this to bring housing solutions to the market.”
Jacobs Entertainment, which is purchasing properties in the Fourth Street area to create an entertainment district, is donating $350,000 for the housing units.
The units are scheduled to open by January of 2020.
