Reno Events for December 7-13, 2018

By Rory Dowd

Music

The 12th Annual Marianarchy Winterball kicks off this Friday 12/7 at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor. The annual December event features two days of local and regional music, raising funds for members of the music and art community of Reno and Northern Nevada.

This Winterball’s beneficiary is Otto Von Danger, noted Burning Man large-scale visionary and creator of “Burn Wall Street” (2012), organizer of Frog Bat and a USMC veteran.

A Bay-area denizen, Otto has strong ties to the art and Burner communities in Reno. Day One festivities start at 5 pm on Friday, featuring headlining performances by Weapons of Mass Creation, Vague Choir, Roxxy Collie and the electrifying Pink Awful.

Day Two begins at 3 pm with Tom Plunkett and finishes off with One Ton Dually, Eddie and The Subtitles and local punk rock heroes, Reno, We Have A Problem.

Relentless nomads, Reno’s own Boss’s Daughter returns to Shea’s Tavern, also on Friday 12/7, after months on the road across the U.S. They bring their #maximumpartytime back home and will be joined by The John Dough Boys (OR), Six Mile Station (RNO) and Outlaw Kindred (RNO), starting at 9pm.

Comedy

The Reno Comedy Collective will be hosting the last of its “First Friday” 2018 series of short-form improv skit comedy. This groundbreaking Reno comedy troupe has been splitting sides and tickling funny bones all year; they invite you for one last laugh this calendar year on Friday 12/7 at 6:30 pm at Reno Tahoe Comedy, just outside the Pioneer Theater.

Theater

Good Luck Macbeth rolls into its second sold-out weekend of “Golden Girls Live!: A Holiday Special.” A fully ‘crossed’ cast entertains with two holiday favorites of the iconic sitcom. With Intermission Bingo and “VIP Champagne and Cheesecake” seating, this show is already setting the the tone of the true spirit of the season: biting sarcasm. Running every weekend through 12/22, including Sunday matinees, “Golden Girls Live!” tickets are available at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3134371.

Brüka Theater opens this weekend with a new Holiday escapade, “The Mousehole Family Christmas Extravaganza.” Turning the Twelve Days of Christmas and other gifting traditions on their head, the show is part of theBrüka tradition of “storytelling complete with enchanting, ridiculous and evocative production numbers and plenty of holiday joy all wrapped up in the spirit of the holiday. Find presale tickets at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3614514.

Reno Little Theater continues its run of “Every Christmas Story Every Told,” a farcical tale of a production of The Christmas Carol that goes ever so sideways.  Including some explicit “Santa Talk,” this charming production is recommended for audiences 10 and up.

Be sure to bring some items of clothing for donation to the “Yule Cat” during every performance, lest the Icelandic winter beastie terrorize the land. Tickets are in very short supply, but what are left can be found at https://tickets.renolittletheater.org/TheatreManager/1/login?event=265.

Dance

Lavish Burlesque Company brings their singular salute to the holidays, “Tease the Season,”  to The Library this Saturday, 12/8. The raucous show will include drink specials, audience participation, ribaldry and revelry. Hosted by comedian Vickie Gordon, the show brings together tinsel and tassels. Have you been naughty or nice? Come find out at 8:30 pm for only a $5 cover.
