Final event showcases great local performers and artists along with a popular Disney movie

This summer the City of Sparks and the Sparks Museum and Cultural Center brought residents “Last Friday on Victorian Square,” the last Friday of the month from May to September. The final event is Sept. 28.

Participants can visit downtown Victorian Square and experience the amenities — the Sparks Heritage Museum and gallery, train display and Glendale Schoolhouse — for free with docents available for tours. Local and regional art will be on display in the Cultural Center and outside on the sidewalks. Also included is entertainment in the Amphitheatre and Great Basin Stage. The evening is capped with a free movie.

This month’s performers are the Maytan Community Band, a group of seasoned citizen musicians performing Big Band, Marches, and Broadway medleys. This compliments the movie “Up,” about a senior citizen, a boy scout and a dog on a great adventure. “It’s a great time to grab the grandkids and have a lovely evening of history, music, art, and a movie,” says Francine Burge, Special Events Supervisor for the City of Sparks. “From 6 to 86, this is perfect night for all ages,” she added.

Artists being featured are Illustrator Teal Francis and Painter Monise McCabe, along with the Drakulich Foundation for Art in Healing. The Sierra Water Color Society’s annual competition participants (and winners) are on display in the upstairs gallery of the Heritage Museum.

Monthly schedule, updated to accommodate the earlier sunset:
Friday, Sept. 28, 2018
5 to 7 p.m.: Museum, Train and School open for free tours
5 to 7 p.m.: Art Booths featuring local artists; check website for lists of artists
6 to 7 p.m.: Maytan Community Band in the Victorian Square Amphitheatre
7:30 p.m.: Free Showing of “Up”

Audience members are encouraged to come early to have dinner in one of the great restaurants downtown. For the movie, blankets, low back chairs, and warm clothes are recommended.
