Every year since North Valleys High School (NVHS) opened, Bonanza Casino awards scholarships to deserving NVHS students. This year two students received the scholarships to help ease the burden of the cost of higher education. Seniors Ashley Alas

Sandoval and Tyler Johnson are this year’s recipients, each receiving $1,000 scholarships from the Bonanza Casino.

“From their academic achievements, to their dedication to fellow students, Ashley and Tyler really stood out for us. I’m glad we’re able to reward them for not just their hard work academically, but efforts throughout the community as well,” said Ryan Sheltra, General Manager of the Bonanza Casino.

Bonanza Casino has been NVHS’ “Partner in Education” since the school opened its doors in 2001. NVHS students in turn give back to the casino by helping to decorate the casino for the holidays and by doing a “spring cleaning” of the property.

The students were selected from their peers based on a number of criteria, including: leadership, overall academic achievement, athletic participation, and community service. Scholarship funds are paid directly to an accredited college, skill/training center, or trade school of the scholarship recipient’s choice. This year’s recipients will be attending the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College.

The Bonanza Casino, a family owned and operated business, first opened its doors in 1973. The casino has two restaurants, Cactus Creek Prime Steakhouse, voted Best of Nevada by Nevada Magazine readers nine years in a row and Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence two years in a row, and the Branding Iron Café and Buffet, which is open for dining 24/7. With six table games, the hottest slots and Blazin’ Saddles, your seat to IGT’s newest slots, as well as William Hill sports book, Bonanza Casino has something to offer every player.
