Sierra Arts Turns Into Sanctuary for LGBTQ in May

Date:

The Sierra Arts Gallery is hosting Las Vegas artist Justin Favela for a sanctuary space and art installation from May 7 to 29, 2018. An artist reception is being held May 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sanctuary/Santuario will convert the gallery into a sanctuary by using walls as canvases to create something new with paper.

Favela’s artwork, which uses paper to evoke the vibrancy of piñata, is known for being both larger than life and an homage to his Mexican/Guatemalan heritage, said Eric Brooks of Sierra Arts.

Other artists can participate in the sanctuary exhibit as Favela builds it out this coming weekend. His piece will pay homage to the movies ‘Sister Act,’ ‘Dark Habits,’ and ‘The Sound of Music.’

“The exhibition will be an immersive installation based on the scenes from movies that I feel are part of the Queer canon and feature religious sanctuaries and have nuns as the main characters,” Favela said. “These are three films that tie into my religious upbringing but are also my favorites because they are Queer as hell.”

Call the gallery for more information: 775-329-2787. Sierra Arts is at 17 South Virginia Street.
