Artown announced today that the new owner of downtown’s historic Lear Theater will be the Sierra School of Performing Arts.

Artown put out a proposal to transition ownership of the theater to a new entity, and the Sierra School was selected because of its capital campaign for the property and the ability to renovate and operate the theater.

Artown board member Oliver X said that “the Lear Committee determined the Sierra School of Performing Arts presented the most implementable and cogent proposal for the future of the Lear, in alignment with Moya Lear’s vision to ‘Create a community space that could host anything from a children’s dance recital to a world-renowned string quartet…'”

No timeline for ownership transfer was provided, but X said that the media would be apprised of developments as they occur.

“We felt very comfortable proceeding with the established team that they’ve put together,” he added.

The Sierra School is a nonprofit founded in 2005 that promotes performing arts and produces Broadway musicals each summer at Bartley Ranch.
