Reno’s iconic arch will go blue Tuesday at 7 p.m. in honor of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

The free event is the eighth year that the Reno Police Department has changed the color of the lights on the arch to recognize law enforcement.

Other events include a memorial ceremony Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the state capital, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Carson City, as well as the annual James Hoff memorial ceremony being held Friday May 4, 2018 from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Project Blue Light began in 1988 when the mother-in-law of a Philadelphia Police Officer, who was killed in the line of duty, put blue lights in her window during the holiday season to honor his memory and sacrifice,” the city of Reno said in a statement. “The color blue is symbolic of ‘peace.’ By displaying blue lights, citizens can send a message in support of America’s Law Enforcement Officers.”
