An analysis by U.S. News & World Report ranks five Northern Nevada high schools among the state’s top 10 according to data the magazine collected.

Coral Academy of Science charter school ranks second statewide behind top-ranked Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas. Academy for Arts, Careers and Technology ranked fourth, Reno High School ranked seventh, McQueen High School was eighth and Douglas High School in Minden was 10th.

“This is great news for our dedicated staff, students, and families,” Washoe County School District Superintendent Traci Davis said in a statement. “I’m delighted that our schools are being recognized at a national level. Our staff has worked so hard to increase the number of students who are graduating from high school, with more and more of them earning honors and advanced diplomas each year. As we continue to support our students with career and technical education courses to prepare them for life after high school, this is a true testament to the dedication of our staff members and students.”

The annual report includes data on more than 22,000 public high schools in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The four-step ranking process was based on the following:

  • Whether students were performing better than statistically expected for students in their state
  • Whether low-income and minority students performed at or better than the state average for the least disadvantaged students
  • Whether a school met or surpassed its benchmark for graduation
  • College readiness and performance on AP exams (International Baccalaureate data wasn’t included because the organization was unable to supply information.)

At AACT, 77 percent of students are enrolled in Advanced Placement courses and 99 percent graduate with their diploma. AACT ranked 552nd nationally.

“It’s evidence of the hard work and dedication our students put in every day, and the wonderful support they receive from the teachers and staff,” Josh Reddig, AACT principal, said in a statement. “I am so proud of our school.”

Reno High, which was 988th nationally, has 53 percent of its students enrolled in AP classes and has a school wide graduation rate of 90 percent.

McQueen, ranked 1,058th nationally, has 57 percent of its students enrolled in AP courses, with a 93 percent graduation rate.
