Thanksgiving Running/Walking Events Set For Reno, Sparks

Registration is underway for walking and running events scheduled in Reno and Sparks on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 24, and those interested in taking part can save money on entry fees by signing up in advance.

SPARKS

The 18th annual Scheels Turkey Trot 10K and 2 mile run and walk is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. at Scheels All Sports, 1200 Scheels Dr.

The timed 10K, which is 6.2 miles, uses city streets and a local bike path. The untimed 2-miler starts at Scheels and circles around Sparks Marina Park.

“Every runner and walker receives a commemorative long-sleeve souvenir shirt, fruit and refreshments,” the city of Sparks said in a statement. “Proceeds benefit Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful for local beautification projects and the City of Sparks Youth Scholarship Fund.”

Entry fees are $25 until Nov. 17, $30 Nov. 18-20, $40 Nov. 21-23 and $60 the morning of the event. Participants can pick up their t-shirts and race numbers on the second level of Scheels near its archery area from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 21-23.

Pets, bicycles, scooters, skates and skateboards are prohibited from the event.

The second annual Wobble Before You Gobble 10K and 5K run and walk is set for 9 a.m. City Plaza, 10 N. Virginia St.

These flat, out-and-back courses take place on streets and sidewalks, going over the Virginia Street Bridge and following the Truckee River pathway west. Participants in the 5K turn around in Idlewild Park and 10K runners continue to Crissie Caughlin Park before turning back.

Both races are timed. Entry fees are $40 for the 10K and $35 for the 5K until Nov. 22. Fees increase to $50 for the 10K and $45 for the 5K after Nov. 22. Entry fees for children who will be 12 or younger on race day are $20 and $15 for the 10K and 5K, respectively, with cost increasing by $10 on Nov. 23.

Partial proceeds from the event go to Children’s Cabinet.

Participants will receive a finisher’s medal, event hat, “goodie bag” and free downloadable race photos. T-shirts are an extra $10.
