Artown Presents: A Tribute To Leonard Cohen

Date:

perla-batalla-dovePRESS RELEASE

As the world mourns the passing of Leonard Cohen (singer, songwriter, poet, novelist and painter), Artown would like to give our community an opportunity to rejoice in his legendary works with a free performance on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 209 W. First St., Reno, NV 89501.

Long time Leonard Cohen back-up singer, Perla Batalla, will wrap her soulful voice around selections from the Leonard Cohen Songbook. Accompanying Perla on the piano will be Michael Sobie. As we gather and listen to Leonard Cohen’s poetic words and beautiful music, local religious leaders will join this musical celebration.

Long before setting off on her solo career, Perla Batalla’s astonishing voice had been in great demand for a host of singers from kd lang, Jennifer Warnes, Iggy Pop and The Gipsy Kings. They, in turn, had discovered this native Californian Hispanic songbird from her years with Leonard Cohen, with whom she toured and recorded from 1988-1994. The experience with the renowned poet was a life-changing one for Batalla, in which she took both cues and encouragement from Mr. Cohen’s vast talent and genuine humanity.

The event is free and seating is first come, so please arrive early (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) and be welcomed into a space for thoughtful reflection, love and peace.

For more information on this free performance, please contact Artown at 775-322-1538.
