PRESS RELEASE

NV Energy and the City of Reno have partnered to reduce environmental impacts and save the City money by installing a solar hot water heating system at Idlewild Pool.

The new solar system assists the existing system, which burns natural gas to heat the pool water. Renewable energy will now heat the outdoor pool during the summer months. NV Energy provided the City with a $30,000 incentive to offset the cost of the project, which will contribute to an approximate monthly savings of $3,125.

“As a leader in renewable energy, NV Energy’s goal is to continue to help our customers reach their sustainability goals,” said Jesse Murray, Director of Renewable Energy Programs for NV Energy. “We are proud to have provided an incentive to help the City financially with this solar hot water heating system and appreciate their collaboration throughout this project.”

Solar hot water systems use the sun to heat water circulating through solar collectors to cleanly and efficiently warm the water used in the pool. This solar hot water system helps the City lower energy usage by approximately 6,670 thermal units and reduces the monthly bill while conserving natural resources and protecting the environment.

“The City of Reno is always looking for ways to make our City more environmentally sustainable,” Ward 1 Reno City Councilmember Jenny Brekhus said. “We are appreciative of the opportunity to participate in this incentive program offered by NV Energy. It makes it possible for the City to heat Idlewild Pool using solar energy, and, in turn, save taxpayer money.”

The total cost of the solar heating system cost $112,406; however, due to the $30,000 incentive given by NV Energy, the City only paid $82,406.

Natural gas customers are eligible to receive this incentive. Renewable energy incentives for gas and electric customers are available for residential and commercial customers.
