Virginia Lake Dog Park Closes Next Week for Construction

The city announced today that the Virginia Lake Dog Park is closing next week for construction that should last about three weeks.

The park is being renovated starting Monday, April 4, 2016. New lights, water fountains, benches and dog agility equipment are being installed.

A new shade shelter is expected to be installed later this spring.

The city also announced that it is not not affiliated with the “Diaper the Ducks” campaign.

“Citizens and media have inquired about a ‘Diaper the Ducks’ campaign at Virginia Lake. The website claims that the City of Reno is helping to fund a new program to put diapers on the ducks and geese at Virginia Lake in an effort to improve the water quality,” the city said in a statement. “The City of Reno is not affiliated with this program in any manner. We believe this is an April Fools’ joke, but our efforts to reach the creators of the campaign and corresponding website have been unsuccessful.”

According to Whois lookup data, the site’s domain name, diapertheducks.org, is registered to a Boomer Barbosa of El Dorado Hills, Calif.

City advises people and pets to use caution at Virginia Lake

Residents are being advised to keep their pets, and themselves, away from the water at Virginia Lake due to a potentially toxic algae bloom.
