Black-and-White Risk at Nevada Historical Society
Black-and-White Risk by Jan Aphelin is an interesting look at the forgotten moments in gaming history in the 1980s. I turned 21 in the early 80s; at that time in Reno when you turned 21 the casinos were the place to explore. The secrets only OF AGE people were allowed to know. These photos brought back those memories.
Taking in each photo and all of the details was a pleasure. Each photo captured at just the right moment to expose the story. As a photographer I found this to be an inspired show.
I did take a few moments to explore the historical society’s regular exhibit and found the combination of the black and white photos and the main exhibit to be a great combination. Thinking of the rich history of this place we call home that the Nevada Historical Society shows us was definitely a wonderful time.

His and Hers / Open Studios / Hearts & Flowers at Reno Art Works
Reno Art Works has Open Studios from time to time. With 27 artists sharing studio space their open studios are always fun and offer a variety of art to chose from. Last Saturday I visited them and saw the exhibit that featured Seth McCorkle and Angie Terrell. Seth paints people who are down and out and Angie paints still lives featuring pieces of trash. I just love their work, especially Seth’s portraits which are taken from mugshots. If you have some time, stop by RAW and check out their gallery pieces.

Mi Vida Gitana at the Reno Little Theater
This wonderful play is the first in Reno Little Theater’s new series La Gente: Latino Theater. Mi Vida Gitana is a story of love and desire with the complications of a gypsy life. The actors are as diverse as the roles they play.
“With this exciting new series, we hope to provide an opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue between current patrons and new audiences. Spearheaded by Series Curator, Tami Castillo Shelton, La Gente will feature a Theater for Young Audiences production that will tour to high schools, a production of a Latino heritage play by a nationally recognized playwright, and thanks to a national grant from the Dramatists Guild Fund, a newly commissioned play by Nevada-born playwright Marvin Gonzalez.” (RLT Website).
I am excited to see more from this new series at RLT.

Bruka Theater has a reputation for serious theater and The Diary of Anne Frank promises to be just that. I have had the pleasure of seeing some rehearsal time and talking to the actors and director. I am looking forward to seeing the production as soon as it opens.

Radium Girls at Reno Little Theater
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage– until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court.
Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees.
As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.
