City to Discuss Virginia Lake Water Quality Improvement Project

Date:

The City of Reno will release details tomorrow of a multi-year plan to clean up Virginia Lake’s water at a public meeting.

The meeting is Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. on the first floor of City Hall.

The City will present a water monitoring and sampling plan that will occur this summer and announce the construction phase of the water circulation improvement portion of the project scheduled for the fall.

Staff also will provide an update on the progress of a scientific working group that was convened by the City. The group has identified several new water quality improvement options that are under consideration.

“The complexity of this issue means that we need to get down to a granular level and truly understand what is causing Virginia Lake’s water quality issues,” said JohnFlansberg, the City of Reno’s director of public works. “We are not going to see an improvement in water quality this summer, but we are dedicated to doing this project the right way and finding an acceptable long-term solution for the public.”

The City will also move forward in the near term with water circulation improvements.

“Regardless of what the scientific results from this summer’s samples show, increasing water circulation will help to improve water quality during most times of the year,” Flansberg added. “Additionally, public results from the text survey show that an overwhelming majority of respondents agreed with a water circulation improvement component for the project.”
