The City of Reno, in partnership with the local Transgender Allies Group, has extended its health care insurance coverage to employees to include gender-affirming therapies.
This coverage will enhance appropriate health care access for employees and their families, and will ensure that those that need transgender-related services have access to the treatments they need.
The policy became effective on January 1, 2015. Reno is the first municipality in Nevada to extend this coverage.
“I am both impressed and pleased that City of Reno leadership recognized that transgender people are part of our social fabric and need coverage of medically necessary treatments in order to live a healthy and fulfilling life,” said Brock Maylath, President of Transgender Allies Group (TAG), which worked closely with City of Reno officials to implement this policy.
The City’s health care policy has been amended to cover both gender-reassignment surgery and hormonal maintenance for Gender Dysphoria.
“The City of Reno continues to lead the State of Nevada in providing appropriate health insurance coverage for all of our employees,” Reno City Manager Andrew Clinger said. “It’s also another way that we’re taking action as a forward-thinking organization.”
