Reno’s Mapes-Walker Estate sold last week for $1.55 million. The home, built in 1945, is a Reno landmark and was home to the Gloria Mapes and William Walker family for more than 50 years.

Terri Cole of Chase International represented the Mapes-Walker family in the sale, and fellow Chase agent Donna Spear represented the buyers.

Cole said that the property’s rich and colorful history gave it a unique draw, along with over three acres of land in Reno’s old southwest neighborhood, which helped to create a multiple offer situation.

The Mapes-Walker family played an integral role in the development of Reno, having owned the Mapes Hotel and Casino, which was at one time the tallest building in Nevada. The family was also involved in scores of organizations, foundations and businesses.

The estate on Mount Rose Street hosted soirées with dignitaries and entertainers throughout the years. It was also the family home where Mapes and Walker raised three children. The legendary Mapes passed away last fall.

The buyers, a family from the Bay Area with Lake Tahoe roots, intend to maintain the character of the home and plan to reside there full time, making Reno their permanent home. Spear says the new owners are familiar with historic homes and are excited about the property’s rich Nevada history.

“We intend on keeping the home’s character while restoring the property over time,” the new owner said.

Spear said that, being from Nevada, the family appreciates the history of the Mapes-Walker family and their significance in the story of Reno.

“They’re excited about all the area has to offer and are looking forward to raising their children in Reno. It was an excellent fit for everyone involved.”

Headquartered in Lake Tahoe, Nevada since 1986, with nine offices in the region and one in London, Chase International and its exclusive affiliations handle a large share of the country’s property. INFORMATION: www.chaseinternational.com.
