Storms cause delays in emergency dispatch services

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning with rain and snow for Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County areas until Friday morning.  Storms with high winds and precipitation frequently cause power outages, downed trees and flooding.

During such weather, the 911 Dispatch Center’s call volume will be high, and dispatchers will try to get to everyone as fast as possible. When calling 911 you may be placed on hold several times in order for dispatchers to answer other 911 calls.

Citizens are reminded to please not call 911 unless there is a life-threatening emergency, and please do not call 9-1-1 because your power is out.

“We anticipate there may be some outages (that) need to be reported to NV Energy at 775-834-4100,” according to an RPD statement

If there is non-life threatening property damage, or potential hazard such as a tree in the road, traffic signals out or areas of possible flooding,  call the Reno Police non-emergency line: 775-334-COPS.

In order to ease phone congestion, please consider online reporting methods. Many past-tense crimes such as larcenies, burglaries and frauds can be reported at http://reno.gov/online-services.  Auto accidents in which no one is injured and the cars are drivable should also be reported online to the Reno Police Department after drivers exchange information.
