— As the holidays get closer, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind you to lock the doors on your car and your home, keep valuables out of sight, be aware of your surroundings, etc. If you see suspicious activity be sure to report it. Read more tips here.
— On Sunday, December 14, officers responded to threats of a phone scam, where a man was posing as an officer from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, stating the victim has missed jury duty and insisting he or she pay a fine over the via credit card to avoid being arrested. It seems the suspect is targeting the elderly population, but the WCSO wants all citizens to be aware of the situation.
— The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office wants to notify the community that Mr. Harry Jim, a Tier III Sex Offender, has begun residing in the 1100 block of East 4th Street and is currently unemployed. He is currently in compliance with all sex offender laws and is not wanted by law enforcement. Jim is being supervised by the State of Nevada, Department of Public Safety, Division of Parole and Probation.
— On Monday, December 15, officers arrested Jose Tafolla on charges of vehicle burglary and PSP on Granite Chief Drive. The suspect was seen taking property from a vehicle before fleeing in his own vehicle. The victim reported the crime and the suspect was stopped a short time later for not having any plates on his vehicle.
— On Tuesday, December 16, officers arrested Joeddie Douglas on charges of grand larceny of a motor vehicle at 2nd and Arlington Streets. Officers observed an occupied stolen vehicle and made contact with the suspect before making the arrest.
— On Tuesday, December 16, subjects began arguing in the 900 block of Manhattan Street in North Reno. The argument escalated and both sides pulled weapons. One subject fired several rounds, injuring a young Hispanic male, who was later identified as Juan Jose Ramirez. Several males were seen leaving the scene of the crime in an older white four door passenger car. The shooting victim was transported to Renown, where he died of his injuries. Witness reports suggest the shooting was gang related and further investigations are being conducted, with police anticipating future arrests.
— On Wednesday, December 17, Michael Kawa was arrested on charges of trespassing and PCS and O&R on North Center Street. Officers responded to a subject being held for trespassing and as they were taking him into custody he attempted to kick them.
— Officers from the Regional Gang Unit have been working with University of Nevada, Reno police to follow leads related to shootings near the University and throughout Reno. Surveillance was conducted and on Saturday, December 13 Tyler Neilson and Bradley Lujan were arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon (Neilson) and assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm in a public place, robbery, and several drug offenses (Lujan). Despite these arrests, officers are still seeking additional information as they believe there are more arrests to be made.
