WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced today a $300,000 grant for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Mineral County through the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP). This grant funding will be used to construct a new boat ramp and access road at Walker Lake.
Over the past century, Walker Lake’s water level has fallen by 130 feet. Due to the continued decline in lake level, boating access is nearly impossible, making it difficult to conduct research. Recreational opportunities have also been reduced, which has negatively impacted Mineral County economically. This funding not only aids restoration efforts, but will also allow for larger boats to be used at Walker Lake, increasing the opportunities for recreational tourism to the area. The Federal Lands Transportation Program (FLTP) in the Washington Office will provide additional funds for project scoping, design assistance and coordination with FLAP.
“Walker Lake is one of Nevada’s most treasured natural landscapes and one of three desert terminus lakes in the United States. For over a decade, I have worked with federal, state, local and tribal officials in an effort to restore Walker River in-stream flows and bolster Walker Lake and its wildlife populations,” said Reid. “Over the years we have seen a steady and continuous decline of the lake’s water level, but this should not prevent Nevadans and visitors from enjoying this natural resource. Coupled with the upcoming funding from the Federal Lands Transportation Program, the funding from the Federal Lands Access Program will ensure that access to the lake is unaffected and Walker Lake can continue to be utilized for years to come.”
