block_n-5224956-1801791Be a part of the largest global public earthquake drill on Thursday morning. Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:16 a.m. on October 16 during “Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills!” Nevadans are encouraged to join in by registering for the 2014 Great Nevada ShakeOut.

Participating is a great way for a family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes– wherever you live, work or travel.

“With more than 560,000 Nevadans already registered to participate in the ShakeOut, we’re making great headway to remind Nevadans we live in earthquake country,” Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Lab, said. “Nevada has the third highest incidence of large earthquakes in the United States. A major earthquake in any community, north or south, is possible.

“We can’t prevent an earthquake, so we have to be resilient, to be prepared so we can perhaps lessen the impacts on lives and economic destruction that a major earthquake can cause.”

To register as an individual, business, school or government agency or organization, go to the official website www.shakeout.org/nevada.

“We have schools participating from all parts of Nevada, mostly entire school districts, plus a multitude of public agencies, businesses and individuals,” Kent said. “With most all students in Nevada participating. we are now focusing on getting their parents and their employers – whether private or government – to register and participate. Everyone in Nevada needs to have a plan and practice for an earthquake.”
