CARSON CITY ─ A campaign to increase flood awareness and the need to be prepared will kick off at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 10, at the West Street Plaza in Reno. The public is invited to attend the event that will, after an opening flag ceremony by the Nevada National Guard, include comments from Governor Brian Sandoval, Sparks Mayor Gino Martini, the National Weather Service’s Chris Smallcomb, Kevin Dick from the Washoe County Health Department and Farley Howell from FEMA.
The Nevada Community Emergency Response Team (NVCERT) will follow with a demonstration on how to fill and use sandbags.
“In Northern Nevada, our biggest floods occur during the winter,” said Rob Palmer, Nevada’s floodplain manager. “Historically, Nevada’s northern Rivers flood about every 10 to 15 years. Recently, we have been reminded that flash flooding can occur at any time. Knowing what to do before, during and after a flood can save lives, protect pets and help minimize property damage”
The awareness campaign will culminate with Northern Nevada’s Flood Awareness Week, November 10-15. Agencies, organizations and residents are encouraged to participate in educational and outreach activities that are scheduled during the week.
