Farm Bureau Bank joins with northern Nevada dairy farmers in the fight against hunger

Date:

SPARKS, NV – September is Hunger Action Month and an ideal time for communities to unite in the fight against hunger. To address this issue in northern Nevada, Farm Bureau Bank, Northern Nevada Dairymen, Model Dairy and the Northern Nevada Food Bank will join forces in The Great American Milk Drive on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014.

Milk is one of the items most requested by Feeding America food bank clients; yet, it is rarely donated, creating a nationwide shortage. For this reason, Feeding America has teamed up with dairy farmers and milk companies to create the Great American Milk Drive, the first-ever national program to help deliver highly desired and nutrient-rich gallons of milk to hungry families who need it most.

The northern Nevada event will kick off at Smith’s Food Store on Baring Boulevard in Sparks on Sept. 19 from 1 to 7 p.m. Smith’s customers and local residents of the community will be able to donate to the milk drive during the event. Donations will enable the Northern Nevada Food Bank to receive vouchers for gallons of milk that they can then give to their clients in the Reno/Sparks area.

Farm Bureau Bank will kick-off the event by providing a check for $5,000, which will enable the Northern Nevada Food Bank to distribute more than 2,500 gallons of milk to low income families in Washoe County.

“Farm Bureau Bank understands the importance of milk in children’s diets and is excited to work with our dairy families in Northern Nevada to provide milk to those members of our community who may not otherwise include it in their family’s daily diet,” said Dennis Hellwinkel, regional banking officer for Farm Bureau Bank.
