Non-profit offers river safety course

The tenth annual Stay Afloat Safety Fair will be on Saturday, July 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free river safety course, hosted by Truckee River Foundation, not only teaches children river safety but distributes free water equipment including helmets and life jackets to kids who play in the Truckee Water Whitewater Park, located in downtown Reno.

The safety course covers proper fitting of water equipment, safe navigation of rapids, and how to escape potentially dangerous situations. According to Debbie Leonard, TRF board member said the training teaches how to swim through the rapids in order to safely experience the power of the river.

Upon completion of the free 50 minute course, participants will be able to keep the free water safety equipment. TRF has distributed more than 1200 free water safety over its history. The non-profit started the water safety course in response to community’s youth who frequent the downtown whitewater park.

The free water safety course is first come first serve. Registration starts at 9 a.m. For more information, contact:
