More than 100 works of art made of 80 percent reused or recycled materials by local artists, primarily University and high school art students, will be on display in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center at the University of Nevada, Reno from July 1 through Sept. 30.
“Reused + Recycled = Art” is a juried and officially curated exhibit and is one of the University’s two official Artown events. The exhibit marks the official start to the Summer of Sustainability, a joint project between the Knowledge Center and the Office of Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Research: Academy for the Environment at the University.
WHAT: More Than a Monster, an 8- to 10-foot tall sculpture created at the University of Nevada, Reno Child & Family Research Center, will be installed kicking off the Summer of Sustainability and the “Reused + Recycled = Art” exhibit. Nearly 300 students from 1 to 10 years old from the CFRC participated in creating the monster.
WHO: In addition to students, teachers from the CFRC will be in attendance to talk about the school’s mission of always using recycled and reusable material in their art projects. Jeffrey Erickson, the John Ben Snow Sculpture Center assistant director in the University’s Art Department, will also be on site for the installation. Erickson originally approached the CFRC to work with him on creating the monster. Within three weeks’ time, students at each of the six University CFRC site locations created a section of the monster.

The entire exhibit can be viewed July 1- Sept. 30 during regular Knowledge Center hours. The Knowledge Center is closed on July 4. A more formal Exhibit Opening Reception and Presentation will take place Sunday, July 13.
