Pony Express ReRide travels through Carson City June 12

Date:

CARSON CITY, Nev. — See Pony Express riders receive eight letters from Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and members of the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission at 2 p.m. June 12 at the Nevada State Capitol, 101 N. Carson St. in Carson City. The event is part of the National Pony Express Association’s Annual ReRide of the historical Pony Express mail route from St. Joseph, Mo. to Sacramento, Calif. The horseback mail service, considered one of the most remarkable feats to come out of the American West, operated from April 1860 to November 1861.

The NPEA’s Annual ReRide, now in its 35th year, will cover the nearly 2,000 miles between Sacramento, Calif., and St. Joseph, Mo. over 10 days. Riders will relay horses and the “mail” across the state of Nevada from June 12-14. Some of the letters to be carried include notes from Gov. Brian Sandoval; Lt. Gov. Krolicki; Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev; Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev.; and members of the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission. The letters will carry the state’s new sesquicentennial stamp and will be sent to locations throughout the country.

Nevada’s sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Nevada’s admission to the Union, will provide opportunities for celebration and reflection as Nevadans come together statewide to commemorate shared history and to build a foundation of cultural appreciation for generations to come. Nevada’s sesquicentennial celebration began on Nevada Day 2013 and will conclude with an expanded Nevada Day celebration October 2014. For details, visit www.nevada150.org.
