High school teacher earns recognition as digital innovator

pbs-learningmedia-digital-innovators-300x38-7391695-4095726KNPB NEWS — McQueen High School teacher Petrina McCarty-Puhl has been selected as a PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator. The science teacher was selected from thousands of applicants from across the United States by an group of judges and now receives year-long professional development opportunities that include virtual trainings, access to premium and exclusive resources and invitations to special events. McCarty-Puhl is one of only 100 teachers selected to receive the honor.

PBS LearningMedia, a partnership between PBS and the WGBH Educational Foundation, and presented locally by PBS Member Station KNPB, is a free media-on-demand service offering pre-K through 12th grade educators access to the best of public media. It delivers research-based, classroom-ready digital learning experiences to engage students in exploring curriculum concepts that align with National and Common Core State Standards. Nationwide, more than 1.4 million teachers have registered access to more than 35,000 digital resources. To become eligible for selection as a Digital Innovator, McCarty-Puhl submitted a video and written essay addressing how she is leading innovation in digital teaching in the classroom, where she currently teaches Forensic Science.

As part of the program, this Thursday and Friday, June 19 and 20, the top 16 Digital Innovators take part in the 2014 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators Summit where each teacher is prepared to support digital learning in the community. Representatives from KNPB, the PBS Members station serving northern Nevada and northeastern California take-part in the tailored professional development seminar and other Digital Innovators and the public at large can participate in the conversation by following along on Twitter using #PBSDIsummit or by tuning into the Youtube broadcast.

McCarty-Puhl has been a teacher at McQueen High School for 27 years. Together with four other teachers, she helped design a 21st Century tools learning program for the high school staff which is set for implementation this summer. She is certified in all secondary sciences and holds a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She also holds a Forensic Science and My Innovative Educator’s Advanced Studies Certificate.
