Fallon’s Hometown Hero event promotes healthy living, celebrates Nevada’s sesquicentennial

FALLON, Nev. (June 5, 2014) – Some of the country’s top athletes, all hailing from Fallon, Nev., return to northern Nevada Saturday, June 21 for a fun run and walk to benefit Churchill County Athletics and commemorate the state’s 150th birthday. As a marquee event in the year-long Nevada 150 celebration, athletes including NFL players, professional golfers and former WNBA players head to Fallon for the fun run and walk that also includes a “Field Day.” Registration is now open at Active.com with divisions for adults and children.

Participating athletes include two-time World Champion heeler Jade Corkill, record-breaking professional softball player Jodi Dolan, NCAA volleyball national champion Jennifer Hucke, NFL player Josh Mauga, professional golfer Scott Smith, former WNBA player and NCAA champion Paige Sauer, and Olympic triple jumper Aarik Wilson.

 

“This event is an amazing opportunity to celebrate and encourage an active, fit lifestyle while also helping Churchill County athletes offset some of the costs associated with playing sports,” said Tim Mitchell, event organizer. “These Hometown Heroes are all former Churchill County High School athletes and we’re so proud that they have decided to help spread the message of positivity and fitness.”

 

The Hometown Hero Fun Run & Walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 21 with check-in starting at 8 a.m. at the Churchill County High School. Participants are encouraged to register in advance for a chance to win a variety of raffle prizes and packet pick up takes place Friday, June 20th from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Fallon Auto Mall, located at 1351 W. Williams Ave.  Participants are encouraged to show Greenwave pride by dressing in green and white.

 

In addition to five and 10K events, the Hometown Hero Fun Run & Walk invites the public to participate in a fun-loving field day at the Churchill County High School where sports enthusiasts can get up close and personal with the pros. Field day activities include a roping station; long jumping; football punt, pass & kick; golf chipping; basketball; volleyball; softball; and a Navy Special Forces workout station. Athletes are available to sign autographs.

Registration fees include an event T-shirt, post-race refreshments, chip timing and finisher medals. There are also customized medals awarded to the top three finishers in each category.
