Rancho San Rafael hosts folklife exhibit through May 29

The Rancho San Rafael Regional Park Visitor’s Center presents One Is Silver, the Other Is Gold: Cel­ebrating 25 Years of Nevada Folklife Apprentice­ships through May 29. The exhibit features 22 artists who have received grant support as master or apprentice artists in folk traditions.

The artists come from a range of tribal, ethnic, cultural and occupational groups found throughout Nevada in both rural and urban communities. The artists are among indigenous Paiute, Shosho­ne and Washoe peoples, and skilled ranchers, miners, loggers and railroad workers.

Art forms in the exhibit include: Polish wycinanki (paper cutting), Oaxacan embroidery for traditional dance costumes, twisted horsehair rope and horse tack, Washoe basketry, Ukrainian pysanky (egg paint­ing) and saddle-making.

The exhibit, organized by the Nevada Arts Council, is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative–Traveling Exhibition Program.

The exhibit has also been selected to be a Nevada Sesquicentennial (Nevada 150) Program and Exhibit.
