Majority of businesses found compliant during “sting” – refuse to sell alcohol to minors

washoe_county_sheriffs_office_log-3704384-7456885The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office cited 14 area businesses for selling alcohol to minors during an underage drinking laws enforcement program conducted over the first two weekends of May.

Supported by a grant from Join Together Northern Nevada, Sheriff’s Office Deputies and an underage buyer conducted checks of over sixty businesses located throughout Washoe County on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, and again on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is committed to the safety and security of the public. Limiting the availability of alcoholic beverages to minors helps to reduce alcohol related incidents and accidents in the county. The Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to report any type of underage drinking activities by calling 775-785-WCSO (9276) or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.

Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the impact of substance abuse in Washoe County by improving access to prevention, intervention and treatment services.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office celebrated 150 years of proud service and community partnership in 2011. Sheriff Michael Haley is the 25th person elected to serve as the Sheriff of Washoe County. His office continues to be the only full service public safety agency operating within northern Nevada and is responsible for operating the consolidated detention facility, regional crime lab, Northern Nevada Regional Intelligence Center, Internet Crimes against Children Task Force, court security, service of civil process, traditional street patrols and Regional Animal Services.

Miriam Hodgman is originally from San Francisco. She previously was the communications coordinator for the largest hunger-relief organization in Sonoma County, California. She has a bachelor’s degree in American history, with a minor in American Indian studies, from San Francisco State University, and has a master’s degree in public administration from Sonoma State University. She enjoys training a variety of martial arts.
