Dangberg Ranch in Minden to be honored May 10

Date:

MINDEN, Nev. — Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki will recognize the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park’s win in the 2013 Discover Your Nevada contest at an award presentation at 12:30 p.m. May 10 at the ranch, 1450 Nevada state Route 88 in Minden. The lieutenant governor, along with members of the Douglas County Commission, also will participate in the planting of three new trees. The public is invited to the free event.

“The Discover Your Nevada win is a big deal to us, and we’re pleased to have the lieutenant governor present the award,” Mark Jensen, park curator, said. “Being voted tops in Reno-Tahoe Territory for two years in a row confirms what our supporters have always known — that the park and its museum collection are worth preserving and enjoying.”

The 2013 Discover Your Nevada win was the park’s second, having also won the 2012 contest. Sponsored by the Nevada Commission on Tourism, the online contest invited the public to vote for their Nevada Treasures in six categories.

The May 10 award ceremony also will include a tree planting event that is an official legacy project of Nevada 150, the state’s sesquicentennial celebration. Funds for the tree planting project were raised by Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch, a nonprofit organization. Partners in the project include Douglas County, the park’s owner; and Mountain View Tree Farm, both of which are contributing to the project. Dangberg Ranch preserves the home of Heinrich F. Dangberg and his descendants. The Dangbergs were a prominent ranching family in Carson Valley and founded Minden. The park includes eight historic structures built between 1857 and 1917, along with a collection of 39,000 artifacts, documents and photographs. Programs include tours, exhibits and other public events, and the grounds are available for private rental.  The park is operated by Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch in cooperation with Douglas County. Details: 775-783-9417.
