In March and April, a total of $3,224.66 in cash and over 16,000 items of food were collected for the Challenge.

Freida Carbery, Healthy Communities Coalition’s volunteer coordinator, said, “The value of this challenge is not solely in the money raised, but in the community spirit it inspires. Local businesses, schools, faith groups, community organizations, local government agencies and individuals come together for the common goal of helping those in need in our community. We believe that $1 or one can of food makes a difference. Volunteers at the Food Pantries continue to be humbled by the generosity and compassion of the people of Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Dayton and our neighbors in the surrounding communities.

Hundreds of local volunteers help to make the Food Pantries in Silver Springs and Dayton run smoothly. The pantries keeps their shelves stocked with food from Food Bank of Northern Nevada and USDA commodities, and with private donations and fundraisers organized by community volunteers. Every month the pantries provide emergency food for thousands of locals, dozens of food boxes for homebound senior citizens, and dozens of weekend food backpacks for local school children. The two pantries building spaces are generously donated by BCB Ventures and Lyon School District, while Healthy Communities provides insurance, grant writing, management, required data collection, and volunteer coordination.
