Vanessa Vancour selected to lead Nevada Media Alliance

vancour_headshot-199x300-4530406-8607086UNR NEWS — The Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism and Center for Advanced Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno has hired Vanessa Vancour as the first coordinator of its Nevada Media Alliance.

In her role as coordinator, Vancour is responsible for overseeing student-produced journalistic content on subjects such as northern Nevada business and economics, environment and culture. She manages relationships with the Nevada Media Alliance’s professional partners, including the Reno Gazette-Journal, KUNR and KNPB; is responsible for all editorial planning and management; and identifies new ways to help grow the Alliance either regionally or through strategic partnerships. Additionally, she is responsible for teaching the Reynolds School’s news studio course each semester.

“Vanessa brings a strong mix of broadcast journalism, digital technology and strategic communication skills to the Reynolds School,” said Dean Al Stavitsky. “Her understanding of entrepreneurship and her ability to guide students in developing innovative methods of multi-media storytelling will advance the Nevada Media Alliance.”

Certified in Google Analytics and a digital marketing instructor, Vancour will also teach an advanced social media course through the University’s’s Extended Studies program in May 2014. In her class, students will learn how to develop social media strategies, evaluate and leverage Web analytics to effectively engage target audiences, and how to optimize social sites for search.

Vancour previously served as an account manager and strategist for Noble Studios, a full-service digital agency with clients throughout northern Nevada, the Bay Area and Southern California.

Fluent in Spanish, Vancour serves on the outreach and advocacy committee of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, founded the Reno-Tahoe Bloggers network and is co-founder/writer for Off-Tract Blog. Her work has appeared in national media including ABC News, Glamour magazine, AOL Daily Finance, Business 2 Community, Redbook Magazine and BabyZone.

Previously, Vancour was a public relations and social media coordinator for the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority where she managed five blogs, four Twitter accounts and the Facebook page for the region’s largest tourism agency. Prior to the RSCVA, she was a video journalist, bilingual reporter and weather anchor for KRNV-TV.
