Elementary school-aged children invited to choose design for third sesquicentennial medallion

Date:

CARSON CITY, Nev. — In honor of Nevada’s 150th birthday, the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission invites all elementary school-aged children in Nevada to participate in choosing design elements for the third sesquicentennial medallion. The medallion, third of four in a series produced throughout the year, will feature design elements chosen by Nevada students. Votes must be submitted to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki’s office by April 30.

“I am so excited for all the elementary-age students in Nevada to get involved in our state’s birthday party by helping choose the design for our third sesquicentennial medallion,” Krolicki, Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission chairman, said. “One of the best things I get to do as lieutenant governor and chairman of the commission is find ways for students to personally participate in this historic year. So I hope all of the classes get involved, learn a little about our great state, vote on their favorite design, enter the contest and maybe win a medallion!”

Students are asked to choose an individual element or combined group of elements that they would like to see represented on the third medallion. The actual design then will be developed from the element or group of three elements receiving the most votes. Each tally sheet received by the lieutenant governor’s office will be entered in a drawing. The winning class will receive a copper medallion stamped with the winning design for each student and teacher in the class.

Individual elements include big horn sheep; Hoover Dam; Liberty Bell — first slot machine; and Lake Tahoe.

Group of elements include:

  • Rugged Nevada: bighorn sheep, bristlecone pine and Mount Wheeler
  • Nevada’s early heritage: petroglyph, tule duck decoy and basket
  • Prehistoric Nevada: bristlecone pine, Ichthyosaur and desert tortoise
  • Sign-up for Nevada: Welcome to Las Vegas sign, Reno Arch and Wendover Will

Nevada elementary schools should have received the tally sheet and background on the suggested elements. For more information, and for classes that would like to participate but have not received the information, contact Linda Frederick, 775-684-7111. Submissions can be sent by email to [email protected]; by fax at 775-684-7110; or mailed to 101 N. Carson St., Suite 2, Carson City, NV 89701.

Sales of the commemorative medallions help fund the Nevada 150 events and year-long celebration. Throughout the year, four different medallions will be released at different dates. For more information about Nevada 150, visit the website www.nevada150.org.

Nevada’s sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Nevada’s admission to the Union, will provide opportunities for celebration and reflection as Nevadans come together statewide to commemorate shared history and to build a foundation of cultural appreciation for generations to come.  Nevada’s one-of-a-kind and diverse history will be celebrated throughout the state for an entire year to promote pride in the shared heritage of all Nevadans.  Nevada’s sesquicentennial celebration began on Nevada Day 2013 and will conclude with an expanded Nevada Day celebration in October 2014.
