RPD: Scam targeting citizens by impersonating law enforcement personnel

1300123_fff2-1437169-6081963Over the last couple days citizens have contacted the Reno Police Department to report suspicious phone calls. The caller tells the citizen they are law enforcement personnel and the citizen has an outstanding warrant or unpaid fine. The caller requests the citizen to transfer money to a green dot credit card to avoid being arrested. The Reno Police Department would like to advise the community we never solicit money over the phone. The Reno Police Department suggests anyone who receives a call requesting money over the phone to avoid being arrested to contact Reno Police Department non emergency line 775-334-COPS to report the incident.

The Reno Police Department encourages citizens to protect themselves against scams over the phone by:

-Resist the pressure to make decisions immediately.

-Never give out personal information, dates of birth or social security numbers.

-Never give out credit card or bank account numbers.

-Avoid buying items from unfamiliar companies until you have confirmed the company is a legitimate business.
