TRUCKEE MEADOWS FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT NEWS RELEASE – Firefighters from the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) rescued a dog from an iced-over pond behind the Hidden Valley Fire Station in Reno recently. Firefighters were conducting a shift exchange meeting when one firefighter noticed the dog had fallen through the ice and was not able to climb out.
Firefighters immediately responded by putting on their water rescue gear known as duck suits and safety lines and proceeded onto the ice to secure the dog. The TMFPD is familiar with this body of water and aware the water was not particularly deep, but it was deep enough to prevent the dog from getting out by himself.
“We could see the dog was getting very tired and stopped trying to climb out,” said TMFPD Captain Casey Jaggers. “Once the firefighter reached the dog, it was a simple effort to get the dog back onto the shore where he was reunited with his owner.”
“This rescue is a good reminder to everyone that pond ice has thinned and will likely remain dangerous through our current warming trend,” added TMFPD Chief Charles Moore.
