SAINT MARY’S NEWS RELEASE
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to help focus attention on the importance of early screening and detection for this potentially fatal disease, Saint Mary’s Imaging Services is offering $100 mammograms through Dec. 31.
The American Cancer Society suggests that women ages 40 and older who have previously shown no symptoms of breast cancer should undergo a yearly mammogram. For women ages 20-39 who are also without previous symptoms, a clinical breast examination is recommended once every three years, with self-examination occurring on a monthly basis.
“Annual mammography screenings are an important tool for women to ensure long-term health and wellness,” said Steve Sweet, director of imaging services at Saint Mary’s. “Our community understands the importance of regular preventive medicine, and we are proud to offer this discounted service so more women are able to receive a mammogram.”
Mammography is a low-dose x-ray procedure that allows for the visualization of the internal structure of the breast. Although the examination isn’t perfect, it is the best method of screening for breast cancer in women without previous symptoms.
The mammogram Saint Mary’s provides includes two digitally acquired images of each breast, analysis by the computer-assisted diagnosis (also known as CAD) system, a radiologist’s interpretation and a final report. The $100 fee is payable at the time of service.
Additionally, Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer was named the first accredited breast center in Nevada by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers in 2010 and recently achieved breast MRI accreditation, the region’s first provider to receive the designation. Saint Mary’s was also ranked No. 1 in the state by the National Cancer Database as surpassing quality measures for breast and colon cancers.
