TMRPA NEWS RELEASE

Next week the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency (TMRPA) will host a free public workshop focused on helping the Truckee Meadows region develop planning solutions to grow in ways that benefit the local community and support regional economic development strategies.

The “Planning for Economic and Fiscal Health” workshop aims to lay the groundwork for TMRPA to examine different development models for the Truckee Meadows area, with the ultimate goal of providing information to decision makers about alternative development patterns and their impact on the region’s fiscal sustainability. The event will be held Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Washoe County Commission Chambers, 1001 E. Ninth Street, Reno. Light refreshments will be served.

“Ensuring an economically competitive community is absolutely critical for our region,” said Kimberly H. Robinson, executive director of TMRPA, who recently accepted the “Community Partner Award” from the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), in recognition of TMRPA’s commitment to providing comprehensive data to support economic development efforts. “We are excited to have assistance in understanding how the choices this community makes about growth impact our ability to provide efficient and effective public services and maintain the quality of life in our region,” added Robinson.

TMRPA will co-host the workshop with help from Smart Growth America, the nation’s only organization dedicated to researching, advocating for and leading coalitions to bring smart growth practices to communities nationwide. In November 2012, Washoe County was one of 22 communities selected to participate in this free technical assistance program. This workshop is funded by the U.S. Environmental Planning Agency as part of a five-year Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities grant.

“Development strategies that consider the economic and fiscal health of communities will support the economy of the Truckee Meadows region today and protect it moving forward,” said Roger Millar, vice president at Smart Growth America. “TMRPA is taking an active role in helping local governments succeed in this endeavor, and we’re excited about an opportunity to provide technical assistance that will inform their work.”
